DJs have a gift of pre­sent­ing the best of a com­mu­ni­ty back to itself. This builds a crit­i­cal mass behind local tal­ent. When DJs are told to shut up and play the playlist, it ends an age-old sym­bi­ot­ic rela­tion­ship between com­mer­cial radio and the com­mu­ni­ty. Pub­lic radio can not fill this void because high song rota­tion and huge adver­tis­ing bud­gets are not pos­si­ble on pub­lic radio. Com­mer­cial radio neglects unsigned bands, small char­i­ties and even the emer­gence of new ideas on a local lev­el. CORPORATE FM reveals the high-finance shell game that silenced the local voice in com­mer­cial radio across Amer­i­ca. The film also reveals how com­mer­cial radio may become local again.
